Art for the Nursery: Which Would You Choose?

8.19.2014
I'm trying to decide on a print for Lucy's nursery to go on the wooden shelf above her bookcase, but I just simply can't choose between the two of these from The Animal Print Shop. That little fox is just too handsome, and the deer is so, so sweet. Which would you choose?

(On the other hand, I suppose I could use the "Love" artwork from Violet's original nursery? It is currently homeless, as it doesn't really fit in her new space. Plus - "free!")

An Update on Lucy's Nursery

8.18.2014

One thing I get a lot of questions about is Lucy's nursery. I know I've never really done a "reveal" because it's really still not finished - for a lot of reasons. Namely budget (being off work without pay for over a year makes you pinch your pennies for sure) and time (with Lucy down to one nap and Violet not napping at all, plus freelancing for a bunch of different sites and a local magazine, plus finding time for friends and family = not much time to fiddle around with home decor) So anyway, here is an update for you, and really there are just a few little things that I need to do to finish off this space.

The main area that needs work is this little corner. You can still see the painter's tape on the shelf that Kev made, the curtains need to be hemmed, I'm trying to decide if I want to hang a tassel garland above the bookshelf or put a few globes that I've collected on top of it, and I need at least one more piece of artwork for the wooden shelf (thinking of a cutie from The Animal Print Shop).  The crib still doesn't quite feel "finished". We didn't use a bumper with Lucy like we did with Violet, and the all-white crib bedding just isn't quite doing it for me. Some fun patterned sheets or a new crib skirt could make it look a little more put-together. In my dream world I'd get a new glider as well - ours is fine and you can't beat the $5 yard sale price tag, but beige isn't really my jam. Overall though, the space is functional and I love the bright, colorful, happy vibe that's going on in the space. I think it's very "Lucy"!

A Pair of Pears

7.10.2014

I came across this pretty pear painting on Pinterest and fell in love - it's right up my alley with that peachy pink/bluey mint color combination. Throw in a bit of black stripe and a generous amount of gold and stir. You can find all of the sources and more over at my post for Houzz.com.

The Mural is Up!

6.09.2014
My sister sent over some photos of the finished map mural - doesn't it look amazing in the space?! Now I can't wait for more. It's so fun to see an idea come to life :) (Here is the original design board in case you missed it!)

And kudos to my brother-in-law for putting it up so beautifully! xo, Lauren

Share and Share Alike (Plus a Giveaway!) with Bunch & Rosa

5.20.2014
The lovely Tampathia of Bunch & Rosa sent over this gorgeous handmade quilt for Lucy a while back, and we love it SO much that I asked if we could have a giveaway for all of you. The colors are completely perfect, I love the design, and it's beautifully made. It was really an inspiration piece that made me want to add more color to Lucy's nursery. It also inspired this shared kids' space - it was a great jumping off point for the color palette. I also love that their quilts are made here in the USA and that they use organic cotton for all of the quilts.

In addition to this particular quilt, there are a ton of other gorgeous designs - some more traditional, some with lots of color, and others with a more subdued color palette. And the best news is that you get your choice of any quilt in the shop!

You can enter via the Rafflecopter below by liking Bunch & Rosa on Facebook or following them on Pinterest. (Sorry, this one is open to U.S. Residents only) Good luck! xo, Lauren

A Girly Glamping Nursery

5.14.2014
I came across this print on Pinterest and loved the campy look in the fresh blush, navy, and orange color palette. It inspired this girly camping (glamping?) themed space. I love that it has rustic and camp-themed elements, but still looks very girly and a little bit glamorous at the same time. You can find all of the sources in my article for Houzz.comxo, Lauren

An Update on the Nursery

5.08.2014
I really wanted to update the nursery for Lucy, but kind of got stuck when it came to decision making. I very much wanted to brighten up the space by painting the walls white and bringing in some fun colorful accessories, but I was also really attached to the tree that I had painted on the wall for Violet.  I finally had a lightning bolt moment when I realized that I could trace the tree with a large roll of tracing paper that I had from another project so that it wouldn't be permanently gone. If I regretted painting over it or wanted to use the design again in a new home I'd be able to put up the tracing paper and transfer the design onto the walls really easily. It felt a lot less permanent and made me feel a lot better about changing the room color.

When the new paint color was up, the room was pretty much a completely blank slate, and I was really excited about the possibilities that opened up with the change.

It's far from finished, but I brought in a few colorful accessories that have been on my wish list and the space feels so fun already. It definitely reflects Lucy's personality more - she's such a happy, bubbly little girl and she is in love with the dots. Every morning she wakes up and points at them with a huge grin on her face.

I'm definitely moving at a snail's pace when it comes to finishing the space - it feels like everything takes a ridiculous amount of time to complete these days. Two kids means no time for mama's projects unless they happen to nap at the same time. And with Violet being very anti-nap or room time these days, that doesn't happen often. For now I've taken the attitude that the most important thing is to fill up our days playing princesses, digging in the dirt, and visiting the library, and the decorating will get done when it gets done. I'm excited to share updates as I sloooowly make progress on the space! xo, Lauren

P.S. The last update on the nursery waaaay back when I was pregnant with Lucy and an update on Violet's room.

Fun Finds to Spark the Imagination

3.10.2014

I have always believed that the perfect kids’ room in some way sparks the imagination. Bright, playful colors and patterns, an abundance of whimsy and fun, and thoughtfully chosen toys and decor help to whisk your little one away into a daydream world of lions and tigers, sailboats and hot air balloons, magical cities and cowboys and fairies. You can check out a few of my favorite finds to create just such a space over on my latest idea book for Houzz.com. xo, Lauren

Camp Out in the Nursery

2.14.2014
Truth be told, you’ll be spending many nights camping out in your little one’s nursery. So why not take the decor all the way with a fun camp-inspired look? It’s one of my favorite nursery themes that can work for boys and girls alike. To keep things from going over-the-top, I prefer pieces that have that rustic and natural feel, but with a modern edge. Think warm wood tones with clean lines and traditional patterns in fresh color palettes. Here are 20 of my favorite pieces that fit the bill. You can find all of the sources over at my post on Houzz.com.

Little Adventurer

1.13.2014

I created this ideabook for Houzz.com back in December, but never got around to sharing it with the holiday rush and demise of my laptop. So here it is a little bit late! xo, Lauren

Nursery Finds to Energize and Inspire

1.10.2014

When the new year rolls around, I always find myself craving fresh, bright, invigorating colors. I came across a striking rug on Etsy that combined traditional kilim patterns with a fun color palette and thought it would be perfect for a brilliantly colorful nursery design! I pulled colors from the rug and threw in some glitzy metallic accents and came up with this fun idea board. You can find sources over at my ideabook for Houzz.com right here. xo, Lauren

Nature Inspired Nursery

7.11.2013

I fell in love with this botanical wallpaper that I came across on Pinterest (for those of you who aren't into wallpaper - it's also a fabric!) and knew I had to design a nature-inspired nursery around it. (Who am I kidding - put a bed in place of the crib and I would totally sleep in this space :))

Clockwise from top left: botanical wallpaper/fabric, butterflies print, linen curtains, origami pendant, baby camel photograph, stump side table, crib sheets, pillow, flokati rug, agate bookend, giraffe plushie, crib, vase, mocassins, glider, chalkboard tree slice
