A Year of Sisterly Love

12.31.2013

There's nothing that warms my heart more than seeing the relationship between these two grow more each day. Sibling love is one of the most special things life has to offer, and I'm so happy to have been able to give them that gift this year. Here's to many more years of snuggles, kisses, cuddles, and love. xo, Lauren

'Tis the Season

12.30.2013
I'm a little behind with sharing photos due to hot-chocolate-mageddon 2013, so here's a fun photo dump from our Christmas season...
 Christmas-Season-2013

1. An impromptu tea party after my little sneak discovered one of her gifts a little early. (Apparently Santa didn't hide it well enough!) Haagen Dazs actually sent over this lovely knit tea set for Violet and she is in love - it's her favorite color ("wed"), and she wanted a fancy red tablecloth to match, so a blanket, play table, and a few gingerbread cookies later - voila! Tea party for two.

2. Violet was able to actually help decorate the tree this year. Ornaments may have been broken (she kept putting everything on the very tip of each branch, then Lucy would grab at the bottom of the tree and shake the branches and a couple of ornaments fell off - teamwork lol) So we ended up moving a lot of the ornaments she put on, but it was still pretty magical :)

3. We took Violet to see The Nutcracker for the first time. She was on the edge of her seat watching the Nutcracker battle the Mouse King, and Clara was her "fave witt". Plus she won a free month of dance classes! Can't wait to buy her some pretty little leotards :) Now every time we drive past the theater, she asks, "Are we near the Nutcwacker, Mommy?" and she's already talking about seeing it again next year :)

4. A silly kangaroo cruising around on her scooter may have knocked over the tree. (Yes there was another ornament casualty!) Luckily a lot of our ornaments survived, although I ended up never putting them back on the tree (it was hard enough to find time to decorate the tree the first time around!) I kind of like the simple look anyway.

5. We attempted a gingerbread house using a stoneware mold that someone gave us a while ago, but it was really difficult and Violet and I both got pretty frustrated. Luckily the central market in our city had a free gingerbread house decorating craft, so we did that instead - it was wonderful! They had the houses all built, gave us a cup of icing and assortment of candy, and Violet had a ball. I think she may have eaten as much icing as she smeared on the house, but the ladies must have planned for that as we had plenty of icing to go around :)

6. I was excited that there were carolers outside of market when we went. Violet was completely entranced and Lucy enjoyed the music as well. I can't wait 'til they're old enough to go caroling! (Okay, on second thought, maybe I can...take your time girls, take your time.)

7. We had a great time picking out our tree this year - we got Lucy all bundled up in her new winter coat and went in search of the perfect Charlie Brown Christmas tree. We must've been successful because the guy who sold it to us said that it was a little "unique" and "iffy" so he threw in a free pine garland ;) Success!

8. Violet and Lucy enjoyed the first snow of the season on the same day we were supposed to get our family Christmas pictures taken, so our photographers weren't able to make it. We were already all dressed, so we went out and made due with our iPhone and I'm happy with how they turned out - the snow made all the difference!

9. Violet enjoying a cup of ill-fated "warm" chocolate (she doesn't think hot sounds like a good idea). She's had a bunch of warm chocolate this season (thanks Haagen-Dazs for the yummy Rudolph hot chocolate mix!) Unfortunately one cup ended up on mama's laptop, so I was out of commission for a couple of weeks. Now, hundreds of dollars and a bunch of brand new parts later, we're back in business! If anyone knows of a genius was to insure electronics, I'd love to hear about it!

10. I've been crushing on Anthropologie's wreath for a couple of years now, but I would've had to sell my first-born child (or not buy a second laptop) to buy one, so I decided to make my own. Here's Violet modeling my half-finished creation :)

11. There's nothing like a baby's first Christmas. Lucy has been completely head-over-heels in love with the tree, and I'm sure a few pine needles have been ingested. That's one way to get her to eat her greens I guess!

So there you have it! Our Christmas season rounded up in one post. Working on Christmas day photos as we speak, so stay tuned! xo, Lauren

I'm working with Häagen-Dazs as an ambassador for their Moment for Me campaign. It's all about celebrating those little moments that you take for yourself, or even doing something you love with your loved ones - whether it's having a special tea party with your little ones, decorating the tree for Christmas, or taking your daughter to her first ballet. So I'll be sharing those types of moments here on A Lovely Lark as well as on my Instagram feed with the tag #HDmoment. We'd love for you to join in too - just tag your photos on social media and your moment may be shared by Häagen-Dazs!

Personalized Gifts

12.19.2013
So I realize that this post is a little late (Christmas is in less than a week!) But unfortunately I'm a little behind on things - you see a little hot chocolate may have been spilled on my Macbook rendering it completely inoperable, and all of my saved work unreachable. Wah wah. So it's been sent away to see what can be recovered, and I'm left to play catch up. So although this post (and a bunch of others) were meant for a much earlier date, better late than never! Even if you can't give these gifts for Christmas, they'd be great for birthdays as well! So without further ado, here are a few of my favorite personalized gifts:

1. A figurine made from your child's artwork from Crayon Creatures:

A lovely photo puzzle from Pinhole Press:

A book of your child's artwork from ArtKive:

Looodus is a newly established children’s design brand based in Milan, Italy. Founded this year, 2013, by Denise Bonenti, journalist and photographer and Kurt Stapelfeldt a designer.

The two have, like many other self producers in the design sector, created a company out of a necessity to provide the type of pieces for their own daughter, which they have not been able to find in the marketplace. The brand respects the aesthetic values and language which they both aspire to in their everyday lives and which they hope to impart to their daughter.

The projects which Looodus undertakes are in the toys and home décor sector, using mainly local Italian wood which are created in close partnership with their manufacturer in Trivero, Piemonte about an hour and a half from Milan. The artisans have a second generation family run carpentry shop and together with looodus are pushing the limits of traditional knowledge combined with digital design to create beautiful hand finish, 100% MADE IN ITALY objects.

The toys especially, are developed with numerous interactions between the designers and a pedagogical consultant. This is to ensure that the items developed give the child the opportunity to grow with it and learn as well as have fun and develop a strong and healthy imagination.

The objects created by looodus at the moment and in the future are all pieces which the founders give to their own daughter, so safety and quality are at the top of their list, just like any parent. The attention to design language and colour choices are the at the foundation of this new brand and the inspiration for the slogan, FOR KIDS BIG AND SMALL.

Riley Construction is a story of a family of creative entrepreneurs. I come from a family of craftspeople and collectors, artists and carpenters. All designs start off as silly sketches which are then turned into original patterns and brought to life in my home studio.

I make my stuffed toys and dolls by hand because I want to preserve my family’s tradition of handcrafting.  I create well-made pieces that combine heritage techniques with a fresh, modern outlook.  My toys are tactile – they feel nice to little hands.  Riley Construction designs are child-approved; my family’s own sons, daughters, nieces, and nephews are the first to test out new products.

I love colors and textures and my shop is inspired by the joy in my life, by my two sweet girls.

Lucy's First Snow + Our Christmas Cards!

We had planned to have professional family photos taken the other day for our Christmas cards, but it snowed and our photographers weren't able to make it. We were all dressed and ready, and the snow was too lovely to pass up, so we decided to make due with our trust iPhones. Not professional quality by any means, but I'm still happy with the results!

It was Lucy's first snow, so that made it extra special. She had a wonderful time puttering around in the sled for about fifteen minutes before she got too cold and I took her in. Next time she'll be going out in her big puffy snowsuit instead of her winter finery, but puffy snowsuits don't make for pretty pictures considering that you can't see much of the subject! Violet wanted to stay out longer so we took her in and suited her up in all her puffy gear and sent her back out to romp and make snow angels to her heart's content. She came back in freezing cold, so we dug out some hot cocoa mix and made her her first cup of "warm" chocolate (hot chocolate didn't sound as pleasant to her, so warm it was!)

A Lovely Lark Lucy's First Snow We're using Minted for our holiday cards this year, and I haven't decided for sure yet, but I think we're going with this design:

Normally I'd go with one big family photo like the ones I posted about earlier, but unfortunately the photos from my iPhone weren't quite big enough (I just got a new one and I'll have to check the settings) for a full bleed picture, so I hunted for a pretty composite card instead. I'm really happy with how it turned out despite it not being what I originally had in mind. Happy accidents are the best, don't you think?! xo, Lauren

Little Goodall's whimsical children's coats are sure to inspire warm smiles. In store find beautifully crafted children's clothing with an emphasis on creative yet classic design and high quality.
Little Goodall was created by artist and designer Molly Goodall in the fall of 2010. A stay at home mother at the time, Goodall was frustrated when her two year old son refused to wear the hoods on his coats. Searching for a creative solution, she designed and made the original Ferocious Felt Lion coat to inspire him to put his hood up in the cold. Friends commented, orders were placed, and Little Goodall was born!

Comfortable handmade animal masks and tail sets, costumes and dressing up accessories for all ages. Dressing up accessories are great toys to encourage imaginative play at any age. Young children don't really like dressing and undressing very often, even if it is for fun, and that is why the mask and tail sets are ideal for them. They are easy to put on and easy to take off. They can be worn with every day clothes at home, in the park or going shopping. They can be even worn while having a little snack because my masks have an open nose and mouth. They are also eco-friendly since the tails are stuffed with clean re-purposed plastic bags. Masks can be worn at all ages even for adults. Great to have fun with the kids at home or to wear it for a fun party event.
