1/2 Kitchen Reno: Inspiration

5.18.2016
So we're currently in the midst of a half kitchen renovation. One side of the kitchen has an island complete with barstools graciously left behind by the previous owner and a baby poo brown crackly accent wall. I'm kicking myself that I don't have a better straight-on photo of this wall in all its glory, but it is what it is. Regret is for the weak, right?

We aren't ready time or budget-wise to do a full kitchen reno, but we've decided that we just can't live with this look a minute longer. Here's the plan that we came up with on a budget:

1. SHIPLAP. I miss our wood plank backsplash wall from the kitchen of our previous house, so we decided that this would be the perfect place to add a splash of shiplap. The wall is recessed on both sides, so we won't have to come up with any awkward solution for the ends or anything.

2. Redo the island. We want to cut down the island to one height (right now it's part counter-level and part bar-level), replace the countertop with some sort of reclaimed wood/butcher block, and paint it. I'm leaning toward black at the moment. We have a LOT of white going on in the house so far and I love the drama of a little splash of black here and there.

3. New stools and dramatic lighting. I'm not sure what style of seating we're going to go with for sure, but I'm definitely leaning toward something with a back for comfort purposes. I really like the metal cafe/Tolix look, or some sort of bentwood stools. Lighting-wise I'm also torn. I love more traditional fixture like this and this, but also could see myself going more modern like this or this. Or maybe something in between? Decisions!!! Which way would you go?

Our Kitchen in HGTV Magazine!

4.20.2016
I'm super excited to see the kitchen from our first house in the May edition of HGTV Magazine! They contacted me months ago, and I just went to the bookstore and bought up a bunch of copies. It's included in the Wow! What color is that? feature, right next to the entryway of a couple of my fave bloggers - John and Sherry of Young House Love. Thanks so much HGTV Magazine - you made my day! :) xo, Lauren

On Having a Rug in the Kitchen

3.21.2015
Since we updated our kitchen, the two most frequent questions I've been asked are, "What paint color did you use on your cabinets," and, "Do you like having a rug in the kitchen?" So I thought I'd do a little update post on the rug situation.

The rug is actually holding up quite well (especially considering that it was a steal at $79!) I do find that I have to vacuum it every other day, as it definitely gets a lot more traffic than some of the other carpets in the house, and it is obviously around food. I am pretty careful about where I prepare messy food - I try to do it on an area of the counter that isn't directly above the carpet in case anything should happen to spill, like when I'm cracking an egg or making spaghetti sauce.

One issue we had was that the girls kept slipping on it, as I had cheaped out and failed to purchase a rug pad. Luckily we received this one from Rug Pad Corner and it has been lifesaver! It also makes the rug nice and soft underfoot, which as you can see Moe greatly appreciates:

It definitely helped that we chose a very flat, low-pile rug with a fairly busy pattern and darker colors, as I have had to spot-clean it a couple of times. I would definitely never choose to have a light-colored or thick/shaggy rug in a kitchen, or even a dining room for that matter. I love that it makes the room feel a little cozier and less sterile, as kitchens can sometimes tend to be. What about you guys - do any of you have rugs in your kitchens? How is it going for you?

Wood Floors (Finally!)

8.08.2014

Ah I love me some wood floors in a kitchen! This shot is extra colorful thanks to the billions of tomatoes and giant squash that are currently overflowing from Kevin's garden. Too bad I don't have access to those all year round - they make for a pretty picture and yummy pasta :) And sorry for the teaser post earlier this week - I totally meant to get a final shot, but with these two monkeys around, it can be easier said than done!

Kitchen Update: We Have Wood Floors!

8.05.2014
Other than enjoying summer, we've been working hard on a few projects around the house. We'd still like to find something a little bit bigger, so we'd like to get the house on the market sometime in the  next few months. It's definitely difficult to find the time with two kids, grad classes, writing, and generally enjoying life, so the progress is slow but we're getting there. Finishing the kitchen is one of the biggest things on our list - we hear all of the time (thanks HGTV) that kitchens are key to selling a home.

The last time that you saw the kitchen, it looked a little something like this:

We had painted the upper cabinets, door and walls, freshened up the decor, and added some shiny new schoolhouse pendants. The plan is to add new cabinet hardware, paint the lowers, install wood flooring, add butcher block counters, add one of IKEA's farmhouse sinks (which is currently on backorder and may never come back in stock in North America due to a manufacturing issue...*wah wah* Anyway, that's another story for another time...unless you have an IKEA DOMSJO single bowl sink that you don't mind parting with!), and a install a new faucet.

In these photos I know that the floor doesn't look too terrible, but in real life the white laminate was absolutely impossible to keep clean. I tried scrubbing it with every floor cleaner imaginable, using Soft Scrub on it, Magic Erasers - you name it, I probably tried it. Plus it was ripped up in a couple of spots from an incident that occurred when moving the fridge. When we installed wood flooring in the rest of the house we had purchased enough for the kitchen as well, but were dragging our feet on putting it in because we were worried about how big of a job it might be. The kitchen had a billion layers of floor and subfloor, plus we thought that the bottom layer might be asbestos tile, which we did not want to disturb. After a lot of deliberation, we successfully glued wood flooring on top of the asbestos tile in our bedroom, so we decided to go the same route with the kitchen.

I took the kids to my parents for an overnight stay while Kevin and his dad went crazy ripping up the existing flooring. It looked a little something like this:

Pretty, no? Until they got down to the lovely bottom layer:

They only did half of the floor at first because we had no where else to put the dishwasher, stove, and refrigerator. After finishing that half of the room, the kitchen looked a little something like this:

The flooring is now finished, but I have yet to snap a decent photo of it! I'm going to try to take on today and share it with you tomorrow. Fingers crossed that we have a nice sunny day for my trusty iPhone to work its magic lol! (What I wouldn't give for a new camera!) xo, Lauren

Kitchen Update (Let there be light!)

10.08.2013
You may remember the hideousness of our plastic light fixture from the before photos of our kitchen. It was meant to look like a capiz shell pendant, but it was definitely plastic and definitely not our style.

The other light in our kitchen was a very dated ceiling fan. They always drove me crazy, not only because of how they looked, but also because they weren't centered with the windows. So I was thrilled when National Builder Supply contacted us to review pendant lights for the kitchen!

National Builder Supply is an an online wholesaler of kitchen, bath, and lighting fixtures, and they have a huge selection to choose from. We had a really difficult time deciding, because they had a ton of amazing options, but in the end we decided to go for classic schoolhouse pendants. Since our tiny casa is from the 1930's, we've often gone the more classic route with choices for our decor (like the hexagon and subway tiles in our bathroom for instance). I love the copper/bronze finish - it really adds character and helps to warm up the space. I think it's also going to look amazing once we get the knobs and pulls on the cabinets and drawers. We're thinking of going with an oil-rubbed bronze, kind of like this:

Kev was super busy with helping me get the cabinets ready for the big reveal, so he didn't have much time to dedicate to the lighting situation. Luckily my grandfather was an electrician, so my dad is really handy with that kind of thing and helped us out. (Thanks Daddy!) It's amazing how much more light they shed - it's so much easier to see when we're preparing food! I think Lucy will miss the ceiling fan - she would probably stare at it forever, but I am SO happy it is gone.

Thank you so much to National Builder Supply for helping us out with the kitchen update, we couldn't be happier with the results! Next on my to-do list for the kitchen is cabinet and drawer hardware - we've been living without knobs and pulls since August, so I'm ready to get going on that project.

Stay tuned for a giveaway to National Builder Supply later today! xo, Lauren

Kitchen Inspiration

8.01.2013
I've been scouring Pinterest for kitchen inspiration, and I think I've narrowed down the look I want:

1. Light and bright + natural wood tones - I'd love to have all white walls like these photos, but since we're painting the cabinets white and have white appliances, I think it will be a bit much. I'd love to get stainless steel appliances, but it just isn't in the budget.

2. It's no secret that I love color and as much as I love the above looks, I definitely want to add some hits of color into the space like this:

Isn't that yellow door just adorable?! We don't have a pantry, but we do have a door that leads to our side porch, so that may get painted a bright, fun color. I actually already own the print in the larger photo above, and that may make it's way into the kitchen as well. I'm also in love with that minty green pendant, but I'm not sure that Kev would go for such a bold choice - we'll see. I know it's never going to be my dream kitchen, but here's hoping it'll be a lot cuter than when we started! xo, Lauren

Kitchen Update

7.29.2013
We waited until last to update one of the most important rooms in the house - the kitchen. Probably because it's going to be such a big undertaking. (That we're kind of dreading, especially with kids) We're currently working on painting the cabinets white, and eventually we're going to replace the tired laminate with hardwood. Not sure what we're going to replace the countertops with. Right now they're a beige laminate - so far I'm liking Formica's Soapstone Sequoia, actual soapstone, or butcher block. While I really love the warmth of butcher block, I'm not sure how it would go over with buyers if we were to sell the house in the future.

I also would like to repaint the walls a light gray, like our back room, and add some pretty things into the space. Right now it's just bare basics. Here's what I'm thinking:

Clockwise from top left: cutting board, egg tray, wooden spoon, winter squash poster, landscape painting, market bag, ceramic utensil jar, measuring cups, ceramic owl, pitcher, scrub brush, recipe box, orchard basket, wire baskets, honeycomb planter, salt and pepper shakers

So I'm thinking the flooring and counters may take some serious time, (hello, three year old and three month old) but here's hoping we can at least get the cabinets painting and spruce things up a bit for now! Wish me luck :) xo, Lauren
