A Lovely Shower: Fresh + Feminine

6.29.2012
When I first came across Katie's shower on her blog, Katie's Pencil Box, I think my draw literally dropped. The fresh citrusy colors, the painterly elements, and the clean white backdrop had me at hello. Although considering that every photo Katie shares on her blog is breathtaking, I wasn't surprised in the least that her shower was no less than perfection.

katies-pencil-box-baby-girl-shower I've so been enjoying Katie's pregnancy journey - incredibly inspiring from her stylish maternity outfits to the sweet letters that her son Max has written to the new baby. I'm looking forward to her nursery reveal (which I'll definitely be sharing with all of you - thanks Katie!) and the birth of her little girl. See more photos from Katie's shower here, and visit her blog here.

Friday Favorites 6.28.12

Thanks so much for all of your support on the launch of my new little corner of the internet! I'm pretty excited about it and hope that you'll follow along with me as I work out all of the kinks. I was amazed when I glanced at my calendar that we have NO weekend plans. That seriously never happens. It's a welcome relief as this week has been jam packed with play dates, contractor estimates, meetings, trips to the zoo, launching the new site, and babysitting our babysitter's four kids (she's a saint). We're pretty spent, so I'm looking forward to an obligation-free weekend. And speaking of the weekend, here are a few fun links for yours:

The professional photos from this wedding I posted about a few weeks ago are just stunning! Worth a second look for sure.

Summer fun in a jar.

How to do a perfect top knot.

A timely upholstered headboard DIY post from YHL - thanks guys!

Super sweet mama + little girl moment.

Edgy bed sheets - one of each please!

Bridal shower in a box. Yes please.

The things that we do that our children see.

I get by with a little help from my man.

Lovely Little Room: Gray + Yellow

6.28.2012
I'm very excited to launch A Lovely Lark with a project that's very near and dear to my heart - my nephew's nursery! My sister is due Monday - eek! and has just finished putting the finishing touches on the space. My brother-in-law and she live in a very modern home in Queensland, Australia, so I haven't been able to see much more than glimpses of the design via Skype. Needless to say I was thrilled to receive a pile of photos in my inbox the other day. So without further ado...

She was hoping to create a soft and soothing space but with fun pops of color. The room started out with a neutral palette of yellow and gray, but she added in a few touches of blue after she discovered that she was having a boy. She ran into a few challenges in finding the modern pieces that she loves in Oz, so they ended up having the dresser custom made (for less than the inspiration piece!) and found a company willing to ship her glider all the way from Canada. They also rolled up their sleeves for a few DIY's - they made the crib skirt and cornice themselves!

I think my little nephew is going to spend a lot of happy days in his lovely little space! Thanks sis for sharing your photos with us!

Exciting News!

I'm excited after a lot of hard work to announce the launch of my new blog today - A Lovely Lark!

I've really been craving a separate space to blog exclusively about children's design and products and I've finally decided to go for it. I've got a lot of exciting posts lined up and I hope you'll follow along! I will continue to blog here on with two cats, but this will be more exclusively a lifestyle and personal blog. I'm sure there will be some overlap, but we'll see how it all works out. Today I'm sharing a project that's near and dear to my heart...here's a sneak peek:

Happy Little Families

6.27.2012

Aren't these wooden dollhouse families just adorable?! I've been working on Violet's dollhouse the past couple of days (painting dollhouse trim is just the worst!) and came across these super cute wooden families online. I think they'd be a really fun DIY that you could easily personalize. You can find all three families here.

We're at the zoo today - hopefully I'll have some fun pictures to share with you!

Reading Corner + Giveaway Winner

6.26.2012
I've been working for the past few days on a cozy little corner in V's big girl room. I wanted a space where we could read books, but there isn't much space to spare! So it's cozy for sure, but still really functional. Here's a little sneak peek:

Also, the winner of the Printrunner giveaway is Katy! Congratulations!

Silence of the Yews

6.25.2012
No, not the soft wooly type. I wouldn't subject you to that on a Monday morning :) I'm talking the bristly green kind. They kind of got slaughtered this past week at the H-Haus...

The perpetrators:

Our yard already looks ten billion times better. Don't get me wrong, I'm no yew hater, but those things were hugely overgrown for our little front yard. Now we just have to decide what to do with the blank space. Grow some grass? Replace them with smaller more maintainable bushes? I'll have some before & after photos for you soon I promise!

On a related note Violet was trying to get her Daddy's attention in the midst of the massacre - it went something like this:

"Daddy" [nothing.] "DADDY" [no response.] "DADDY!!!" [still silence.] "KEVIN!!!!!!"

That one had me rolling for days. Goodbye yews. Hello mini-me :)

Our Master Bedroom - Suggestions?

6.22.2012
Whew! What a week. I've been outside almost all day every day with the babe enjoying the summer weather and I've barely had a chance to even glance at my blog roll. So in lieu of a Friday Favorites post I thought I'd share some current photos of the master bedroom with you.

It's a definite work in progress - I'm think of painting the room white as it's a pretty small space and I think it would help to make it feel bigger (and brighter). We're definitely getting rid of the headboard - I'm hoping to make a DIY upholstered one before we start adding to our family. I HATED nursing with this headboard - soooo uncomfortable. It was a hand-me-down from my sister-in-law and I so appreciated all of the furniture she gave to us (we had NOTHING when we moved in), but I think six years is enough and it's time to move on to something a little more comfortable (and taller).

The nightstands are also hand-me-downs from my parents which we painted. Now I'm kind of wishing for the natural wood color again but oh well! It's tough to find anything that will fit as obviously we're very short on space. If I had my druthers I'd have some antique mismatched nightstands or a pair of these. But I think it's not to be - at least not in this space! The only light fixture in the room is a very very sad sconce is left over from the previous owner. I can't believe we've lived this long this way but like I said we kind of put this room on the back burner while we worked on the rest of the house.

I'm not sure if I want to hang art on either side of the bed or go for plug-in sconces above the nightstands. Opinions?

As far as the opposite side of the room is concerned, it needs a lot of work as well. The odd radiator cover on the right hand side of the room will go, along with the radiator inside of it. We've replaced it with a smaller more compact radiator and this one has just been sitting there until we got around to working on this space. The mirrored wall and upper cabinet will probably go as well. The barn doors I'm up in the air about. What do you think of them? Like or loathe? I've lived with them for so long now that I'm indecisive.

We've also already purchased wood flooring for this room which I'm currently getting quotes on having it installed. The Hubster installed the flooring throughout the rest of the house, but has since hurt his back so I don't a DIY an option this time.

So that's pretty much it. I'd love to here your suggestions - it's a small space and I'd really like to make it more comfortable!

Nesting: Baby & Children's Design

I wanted to take a minute to introduce all of you to one of our lovely sponsors - nesting. It's run by mama-to-be Susan Hutchinson. Susan is an interior designer, stylist, and blogger and will soon be giving birth to TWINS! Her home and nursery were recently featured on Design Sponge and are just gorgeous.

If you're looking for some help with you baby or child's space, Susan offers a variety of services from an e-design to a room layout to just a simple chat via phone or email. I met Susan fairly recently at a workshop that I attended with Joy Cho of Oh Joy! in Philadelphia and she is just as lovely in person as she is online. You can view examples of Susan's e-designs here.

I want to thank all of my wonderful sponsors who help to make it possible for me to continue to write. Please take a minute to visit each of their sites - you won't be disappointed! xo, Lauren

Soaking it in

fathers-dayIt was the best of days. That sweet lazy morning time together when the light is just right and the air is just a little crisp. Omelettes and story books. Picnics and skipping stones over the lake. Hiking over roots and rocks (every one of which Violet had to step on). Holding hands and spending time - just the three of us. It was one of those days that you just want to soak up and hold onto tightly.

We're a lucky couple of girls to have such a wonderful man in our life. Thank you Kevin for being such an amazing father to our little girl. We love you very much.

Friday Favorites

6.15.2012

My absolute favorite thing this week? Spending ENTIRE DAYS outside with my favorite little person. The weather has been perfection - a light breeze, warm but not hot temperatures, and no humidity. The teepee has been our second home - we've been reading books, having picnics, breathing in the fresh air, and doing a lot of snuggling.

And in the online universe this stuff isn't so bad either...

Totally making the DIY pom pillow in this tutorial.

Pretty amazing stairway before + after

A pretty picnic basket that you can make yourself.

Completely in love with Anna Spiro's new line of wallpapers for Porter's Paints.

Lovely printable wedding table numbers

I want this bathroom. Or really any room with Julia Rothman's wallpaper for Hygge & West.

Love this addition to Nicole's living room. If I had a place for the larger size of the botanical print I would totally own it myself. I'll just have to stick with my mini version for now.

Violet would spend hours in this (okay maybe half an hour which in toddler time is like an eternity). But still.

Super cool dollhouse. The wallpaper tree - gasp!

Tips for traveling with a toddler. Thanks Jen - I'm going to need all the help I can get! Looking forward to part two.

How is it that Liz is always so right on? Re: Your Child is Not Special

This has to be hands down the most beautiful baby shower I have ever seen.

Every woman wants a man who loves her this much. So much that a post about his birthday turns into a love letter to her. [Kevin if you ever decide to start up a blog make sure it's full of lots of this gushy stuff.]

Happy weekend! xo, Lauren

Master Bedroom Refresh

6.14.2012

So all of the bedding is officially put together and I love it! The room is perking up already. Unfortunately our old too-small-hand-me-down headboard is looking even sadder than ever. In my dream world I'd purchase this bed from Room & Board or this headboard from West Elm but alas we're just normal people with no piles of extra money lying around the house. So I think I may DIY me a headboard? Professional DIYers - where do you buy batting and foam for this sort of project? Joann Fabrics or some such place?

Luckily for my budget I already own this cute geometric terrarium and this dreamy poster. I can paint my own ampersand (though this one is lovely) and I'm pretty sure I could DIY these bookends in a flash.

My thoughts are turning to paint (I'm leaning toward an almost-white) and lighting (we need plug-in sconces above our nightstands). The lighting situation in the room is seriously grim with only a sad droopy old single sconce hanging haphazardly above the bed. Decorating gurus of the world - I'm completely open to suggestions! Favorite shades of light and bright paint? Inexpensive but lovely sconces? Any sources to share? I'd be forever grateful!

xo, Lauren

P.S. Sorry if my posts end up with typos or sound like a crazy person wrote them like I'm babbling. I'm writing late at night now that I'm home for the summer instead of my usual after-work time slot for blogging. And me + late at night = scary stuff. And now I'm off to bed...

A Letter to My Little Girl

6.13.2012

Ah my little girl. Every time I sit down to write about you I feel like I get tongue-tied. There are so many things I want to say but the words with which to express them continually elude me. Nevertheless, I don't want to forget this moment in time - I know it will quickly be gone. So I'll write to you sweetheart - I know that you won't mind if the words aren't quite perfect...

Dear Violet,

You're now two years, one month, and two days old. This age is you at your purest and most uninhibited. I'm reveling in your sweet innocence and dreading the days when you will become self-conscious and worried about what others think of you. Please hold onto that sweetness, that confidence, that innocence with all of your might my love. You only have one life to live. Make it one full of pure unbridled joy and love.

Here are a few (of the many) things that I love about you at two:

You currently have the most gorgeous Mel Gibson-style curls and you rock them like no one else could. Even if you have the craziest bedhead imaginable you shake your locks from side to side with perfect satisfaction and pride. And I love you for it.

You are a perfect contradiction. Miss Independent and Miss Mama's Girl all rolled into one. You want to do everything yourSELF (but let me hold your 'baby' finger, mama, while I do it) You love so many girly things - makeup, shoes, purses, hats, brushing mama's hair (you surprisingly take the task of styling others hair quite seriously). But your hair? Oh let it run wild and free and tangled and wispy! And as far as clothes go? You prefer your birthday suit any day to a frilly dress.

You make me laugh all day every day. When you burp you say, "NU me!" in the funniest way possible. When your finger starts roaming toward your nostril I usually try to dissuade you, but every now and then I forget myself and ask if you're digging for gold...that is until yesterday when you pulled out a speck and proclaimed with glee, "Mama - GOLD!" Whoops. Every group becomes a family. If you have three rocks - Mommy, Daddy, baby. The prongs on your seatbelt buckle? Mommy, Daddy, me, Opa, Nam. Three nuggets in the toilet? Mommy, Daddy, ME! (Yep. Sorry TMI I know.)

I love how animated you get are when you watch movie clips or listen to an exciting book. While reading The Little Blue Truck you scream, "Muddy muddy!!!" While watching The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, "Lulie - run! Edmuuuunnn - RUN!" Or during Shrek, "Daddy - uh oh!" "Mommy, Daddy, neigh, diddy! Bad lady! Stop, laaaaadeeeee! Bubbles...POP!"

I love that you stall with all of your might before bedtime. Your favorite stall tactics:

"Mommy, hiiiiide!" as you disappear behind the curtains.
"Mommy, moh booook!"
"Mommy - Poppy, baby" (sing Hush Little Baby).
"Daddy, wah-duh" "No Daddy, two wahduh!"
"Daddy, up!" *makes kissing noise* (Daddy needs to come up and give me a kiss!)
"Mommy, paaaaat!" (Pat my bottom)
"No naaaah." (No pat right HERE)
"Mommy, woah liiiiighhhhtttt" (turn the light up please)
"Mommy moh pat!"
"Mommy, baby!" (Please put a baby doll in my crib) "No, two baby!" (No I meant the other baby)
"Mommy, pee, poop!" (I have to go to the potty!)
Rinse. Repeat.

(Oh and my latest favorite - "Mommy, oweeee!" - Mommy, I'm going to pretend to have hurt myself so that you will come running.)

And when you sing yourself to sleep? That just makes my heart ache (in the best way possible).

Every day you learn something new, say something new, teach me something new. I never knew the patience I possessed until you became a two-year-old. I've learned how to slow down and pay attention. I had forgotten how magical it is to catch lightning bugs. I had completely overlooked the little white flowers in that grow in the grass. Because of you I meet new neighbors daily. I'm not really a dog person and I've met and petted more dogs than I ever thought humanly possible. I am outside more than I have been in years. I have conversations with random strangers on a regular basis. I jump into freezing cold pools and play outside in the drizzling rain. I hunt for acorns and pick berries. I dance and run and sing and twirl. You've changed my life in the most beautiful way and I am thankful every day for you. Thank you for being my little girl.

I love you more than all the stars. And that's a whole lot.

xo,

Your Mama

Hello Summer!

6.11.2012
Ah, what a wonderful feeling. School's out for summer and we've been living it up. So far (other than colds) life has been full of lazy days in the sun, eating corn on the cob, dining al fresco, bathing suits and bubbles, splashing in water, and wearing copious amounts of hats...

I was a bad blogger last week and left you hanging - so sorry about that! Just fair warning that things may be a bit rocky this week as well as I'm adjusting to a new schedule of being home with the babe full time, so bear with me. I promise I'll get this thing back on track soon enough. xo, Lauren
