20 DIY Halloween Costume Ideas

9.12.2011
Halloween is one of my absolute favorite holidays. There's something about it - that crisp autumn breeze, flickering pumpkins, full moons. A night where you get to be anything you want while racing up and down the street, leaves crunching underfoot, trying to gather as much loot as possible before the night is over. It was a sad year for me when I realized I was too old to go trick-or-treating.

That is...until now. One of the great joys of parenthood is getting to relive all of those cherished childhood moments and see them fresh and sparkling and new through the eyes of your child.

My mom made most of our costumes growing up and I intend to make many cobbled-together creations for my own children. My sister and I were many things - a princess (but the homemade kind, not the Disney type), a hobo, a box of Tide, even a Frankenstein ninja. There's just something a little bit more special, more memorable even, about a handmade Halloween costume.

So for all of you brave parents out there who are thinking of crafting a costume for your little one, here are a few of my favorite inspiring DIY costume ideas:

Baby Sushi (You can buy this one on Etsy!)

And last but not least - my pretty little witch from last year's Halloween

Hope I inspired a few of you to create your little one's costume this year! It's so much fun and the memories will be priceless. And don't worry if it isn't perfect - it will be all the more adorable. I'd love to see your creations!

  2. What a great collection. I especially love the ventriloquist and Max! Making your own costumes is always so much better than buying them. I can't wait to make one for my daughter for her first Halloween. Do you have Violet's costume all planned out yet? :)

  3. No, we're kind of last minute people around here. We do have a kangaroo costume that we bought last year and then changed our minds at the last minute because a) we really wanted something homemade and b) it was HUGE, but not sure if we'll use it or not.
