Call me nosy, but when Violet was in her crib I was just dying to be able to what she was up to. Whether she was singing herself to sleep as a toddler, wiggling herself into funny positions as an infant, or just laying there in that sweet baby slumber as a newborn. I felt like I missed out on a lot of adorable moments and would
love to have a video baby monitor for our new little guy or gal. Unfortunately Kevin thinks I'm crazy and that it's a waste of money :/ What do you all think? Do any of you have a video monitor or wish that you did? Any ideas on how I could convince him? :) You're the best!

We got a video monitor for baby #2 and are so glad we did. It's nice to know what they're up to, i.e. if crying but still lying down, stay out of the room, they'll probably fall back asleep. If they're crying and standing up in the crib, or even trying to get out, that's a different story. I say go for it!
ReplyDeleteI didn't want one for our first at all (neither did my husband) but we've both decided we want one for our second. Especially for sleep training when the babes are young, but even now when I hear all kinds of racket and singing - I'm with you. I want to see what they're doing :) If you're only planning on having 2 children - tell your hubby it's the last chance at this and it will make you feel much better to have this ability to see your child.
ReplyDeleteWe started with the basic cheap audio monitor, since I was the one who said we didn't need anything fancy. Around 1 year, we went thru a rough patch for her falling asleep. Decided to get a video monitor and wish I would have done it sooner! Like the other post, it was nice to be able to see if she was just fussing herself to sleep, or if she was about ready to climb out of the crib! I love being able to watch her as she talks herself to sleep. I think it's totally worth it. Perhaps a trial run for your husband - buy from a retailer with a good return policy and send it back if it's not right for you! We have the Motorola 3.5inch version and we think it's great. Got it on Sam's club online for $188 I think.
ReplyDeleteWe have had one for oth kids and now use two cameras (one in each room) with just he one monitor. Best money we spent, hands down. I cannot even imagine having missed out on all of the cuteness that goes on when we're the room! Aside from all of that, sleep training is a completely different experience with a video monitor. 99% (ok, maybe I'm exaggerating!) of the complaints and stresses I hear could be alleviated if parents could just see what was actually going on. Knowing that they are safe makes it so much easier to not run in at every little whimper. I'm not sure the cost as we bought ours 3.5 years ago, but they are no more than $200. We have the summer infant and have been really happy with it.

Our video monitor is definitely in our top 3 of baby items we've purchased. We love it! It is our first baby so I can't compare our experience to that with an audio only monitor, but both my husband and I would purchase it all over again. At first he thought it was a frivolous expense but admits he was wrong. We've been able to witness so many precious moments that we wouldn't have been able to otherwise, and it brought us peace of mind knowing she was ok. It was especially helpful during the night to be able to glance over at it rather than make an unnecessary trip to the nursery anytime she made a noise. After months of researching monitors we bought the Motorola 2.8 inch digital monitor and have been very happy with it. Excellent picture and sound. It is available at Wal-Mart for $180. If you decide to buy a video monitor you won't regret it! Good luck!
ReplyDeleteYou have to get the video monitor!! We started our registry process all - ohhhh that's so unnecessary...how wasteful... But once we realized that we could look at her on the monitor and not hover outside the door (or even worse - go into the room) everytime she makes a noise, we knew that it would help us establish better sleep routines. This was our first baby so we didn't have any prior experience, which is obviously different from your situation, but at the risk of jinxing it, our daughter has mostly been a very good sleeper. I'm sure partly we're just very lucky and our next baby will probably be a terror, but I think part of it is because it helped to ease the guilt associated with leaving her in her crib to "cry it out" so-to-speak (for a couple minutes) when I could see that she really was fine, and therefore it also eliminated any issues with her knowing I'll come check on her. And conversely, other times, I can see right away when she just isn't going to go right to sleep so I should get her right away, which I think also prevented her from thinking "oh if I cry, she'll come get me" because I'm in there so quickly. Like Emily above, I recommend the Motorola 2.8" digital monitor. My husband researched them a bit last summer and that was his favorite. It's been a lifesaver! (It's also been great to have for grandparents and the like who want to "take a peak" when visiting or babysitting. They just look on the monitor and don't risk waking baby up. HUGE!!)

ReplyDeleteResearch "ip cameras" you can view them on your smart phone. Much cheaper and work great!
ReplyDeleteI refuse to use Drymax diapers because my baby has such sensitive skin so I love that they still have a product without Drymax features. Simply the best kind of diapers on the market.
