A New Headboard for a Nursing Mom

7.08.2010
Late last night in the middle of a loooong stretch of nursing Violet, I made a decision - we need a new headboard. The one we currently have is a wooden hand-me-down from the Hubster's sister that we painted black. The problem is that at the top is a piece of molding that juts out, and while it looks nice, it is killing my neck. No matter how many pillows I pile up I can feel it. And if I try to sit forward a bit, my neck hurts from the strain of doing that as well. Not to mention the fact that I'm usually way too tired to hold my neck up at this point. What I need is a nice upholstered headboard, so today I set about finding an affordable option.

I'd like a tan/linen color and I was looking for one that was relatively inexpensive. Here's what I found:

West Elm Nailhead Upholstered Headboard ($449):

JCPenney Adriana Twill Headboard ($349):

JCPenney Custom Amy Upholstered Headboard ($279):

Sears Lands' End Country Luxe Upholstered Headboard ($499):

Target Oatmeal Greenwich Tufted Headboard ($219.99):

Target Dolce Button Tufted Linen Headboard ($249.99):

Target Oatmeal Linen Slipcovered Headboard ($299.99):

Pottery Barn Jameson Headboard ($499):

I really like the Pottery Barn headboard, as it goes all the way to the floor. The Target headboards are obviously the least expensive though (although still more than we want to pay). We may look into making one ourselves before making a final decision.

Here are some resources I've found:
Killy & Oliver's Handmade Tufted Headboard via Apartment Therapy
How To: DIY Tufted Headboard via Apartment Therapy
DIY: Upholstered Nailhead Trim Headboard via Casa Sugar
DIY Upholstered Headboard via Southern Exposure
DIY Video: Grace's Upholstered Otomi Headboard via Design Sponge

If anyone has any suggestions or tips, they would be greatly appreciated!

  1. We are headboard-less and I've been meaning to make an upholstered version for ages. I too love the Pottery Barn one since it goes to the floor and doesn't require any wall holes - our house has old plaster walls that I try not to mess with - but almost all the DIY versions mimic the Target approach. Then I stumbled on a great tutorial from Country Living that goes all the way to the floor, attaches to your bed frame, and looks relatively easy. Check it out: http://www.countryliving.com/crafts/projects/upholstered-headboard-0501

And if you make it let me know how it goes. I need to get inspired!

  2. These are lovely! I'm looking for a similar headboard - linen or cream fabric, possibly tufted, not TOO expensive. My dream headboard is at Crate & Barrel, but I'm not sure if I can convince my husband to fork over that kind of cash for it :-) Every time I see it, though, I drool! It's beautiful!

  5. I made one similar to the target one 5 or 6 years ago and between the plywood, foam, batting and fabric, I know I spent way less than $100.

I will be recovering it this month and posting a tutorial. It is really easy!

  6. I cheat and we both lay down at night. I know they say that makes an ear infection more likely but it's been successful with all of my kids. And it's sooo comfortable. We have never had a headboard and in this house we keep our beds in front of the window and the fans so we don't want to block them!

I think Martha Stewart has some good instructions on how to make things like that. I know I have something on making a new seat cushion for a chair and that seems like it would be similar to a headboard.

  7. I always have good luck with overstock.com or homedecorators.com. Or, you could make your own since you are so crafty :). You could use some fun fabric. I love Calico Corners for fabric.

My second daughter is now 14 months and I can recall all of the weird aches and pains from carrying, nursing, etc. I went to the chiropractor for a while and it really helped. Good Luck and have a great weekend!

  8. I'm trying to remember which blog I read so I can find it and send you the link. This person invested in a large piece of super thick felt, cut to specifications. It looks and feels great all on it's lonesome.
