So all of the bedding is officially put together and I love it! The room is perking up already. Unfortunately our old too-small-hand-me-down headboard is looking even sadder than ever. In my dream world I'd purchase this bed from Room & Board or this headboard from West Elm but alas we're just normal people with no piles of extra money lying around the house. So I think I may DIY me a headboard? Professional DIYers - where do you buy batting and foam for this sort of project? Joann Fabrics or some such place?
Luckily for my budget I already own this cute geometric terrarium and this dreamy poster. I can paint my own ampersand (though this one is lovely) and I'm pretty sure I could DIY these bookends in a flash.
My thoughts are turning to paint (I'm leaning toward an almost-white) and lighting (we need plug-in sconces above our nightstands). The lighting situation in the room is seriously grim with only a sad droopy old single sconce hanging haphazardly above the bed. Decorating gurus of the world - I'm completely open to suggestions! Favorite shades of light and bright paint? Inexpensive but lovely sconces? Any sources to share? I'd be forever grateful!

P.S. Sorry if my posts end up with typos or sound
I've done two headboards, you can find batting and foam at Joanne's. You may find better fabric deals at fabric.com.
ReplyDeleteThanks Kathryn - want to come do a third headboard for me? ;)
DeleteThere was an issue of Country Living that was all about white. I was totally in love! You might be able to look it up on their website and find the colors they used for ideas. The only problem is choosing between 10 awesome shades.
ReplyDeleteThanks I'll have to check that issue out!
DeleteWe just finished up our headboard a few months ago. Batting was from Joann's and instead of buying foam by the yard (which is expensive) we bought an egg crate foam mattress pad and then turned it so the flat side faced out.

Oh and we used the same Pottery Barn pillow case. :) Good luck!
SUCH a good idea with the egg crate - thanks for the tip!
DeleteHave you looked at JC Penny's upholstered beds? They actually have some nice options in tons of colors. I've coveted an upholstered bed from R&B or PB for a while but alas, no piles of money here either. I'm mulling over a more budget friendly one from JCP. And is that the Woodland bedding from PB? I have it in my guest room & it's lovely. As usual, I love your style!

DeleteYes it is the woodland bedding! Love it so much. I only went with a small dose for the Hubster's sake. He's down with florals but I didn't want to go to crazy on him. Running over to JCP's website now...
DeleteJoanne's Fabrics has an iPhone app that you can use to download coupons. There's a 50% item each week... I used that coup to buy all the foam for our ginnnorrrmousss headboard. Foam can be pretty pricey, so this makes a huge difference on the bottom line of the project.
ReplyDeleteWe still have to add the nail heads to ours, but we found the tutorials at Southern Exposure (http://southernexposure1.squarespace.com/southern-exposure/2010/5/18/diy-upholstered-headboard.html) and Design Sponge (http://www.designsponge.com/2009/09/diy-video-graces-upholstered-otomi-headboard.html) to be really helpful.
And if you're really ambitious, try the Upholstered Bed tutorial at Manhattan Nest (http://manhattan-nest.com/2010/07/23/a-whole-mess-of-staples/). I bought an Ikea bed on clearance to try this, but my husband ended up liking it as-is, so we never tried it. I'm still dying to do it, though!
Good luck!
Thanks for the coupon tip and links!
DeleteWe just painted our dining room and living room Behr's Cotton Fluff. It's their ultra white with just a couple drops of some yellows to make it a little bit warmer. Of course lighting and other elements in every house are going to make the color vary, but we love it!!
ReplyDeleteHave you shared a photo of your bedroom? I guess I'd be curious how much natural light you get in the room. New lighting will make a world of difference in your room. I've gone to Overstock for various pieces of lighting. Shades of Light is another good one and their prices are decent.
ReplyDeleteNo Holly, I haven't shared a photo...well there is one on Instagram of the new bedding. The natural light is just okay. We definitely need a lighting overhaul!
ReplyDeletewe love seeing our ampersand print in your bedroom refresh! love it all!!! :)
