When Violet was an infant, the Moby wrap was one of my best friends. She loved it, and I was able to have her snuggled close to me and still get things done around the house. We never quite got the hang of nursing in it, but she slept in it, went on walks in it, and just hung out. For the new bambino, I'd love to continue to use the Moby but have other 'baby wearing' options as well. The Sakura Bloom ring sling has always interested me - it's gorgeous and seems like it would be great for warmer weather. Sometimes the Moby wrap would get a little hot for both of us. And the Ergo carrier seems like it would be a great option that both Kevin and I could use.
On the downside they are both fairly expensive and I don't have a store nearby that I could visit to try one out ahead of time. Does anyone have experience with either of these carriers? Or did you use another carrier that you liked with your baby? I'd love to hear about your experience! Instead of an Ergo, take a look at a TULA baby carrier- it's built similarly but so much more comfortable! Plus, the colors & prints are so chic- there's even a chevron option!

DeleteI love my Ergo. It really depends on lifestyle though. I think the ergo has lasting power @ 2.5 we still use it; recently while hiking in the rainforest. She slept, secured on my back. I got to do my thing.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure how Ergo is for an enfant, but my experience with others (basic front carrier by (MacLaren) vs the Freehand mei tai I had, I much preferred the sturdier straps of the Maclaren (and ergo) - I find the straps of the mei tai cut in and/or rise up and hard to reposition. I sold my Freehand and continue to use the ergo.
I have noticed a trend for carrying child in front now, rather then on the side (I do think that is more comfortable/better on your body for the parent). 10 years ago when my first was born, many carriers positioned baby on the side (Maya Pouch, ring sling, hip hammock, etc); now I see more on the front.
I had Ergos with my last two, and I'll definitely get another one with this one (sadly, my last one fell victim to basement storage and a very rainy fall a couple of years ago, but it was 7 years old anyway, so there are probably some upgrades I need to take advantage of). Glad to hear you liked the Moby Wrap....I found one at Goodwill--looks brand new!--for $5 awhile back. Hoping to get some use out of it!

I love the Ergo, and I really liked the infant insert--it's worth it, I think. It's really comfortable. I never really got the hang of the ring sling, but some people love it. Not sure the Sakura sling is worth it--there are some nice ones on Etsy for around $45 and they seem to be the same idea.

DeleteI love my Ergo. I also loved the Moby, but the Ergo is so much faster to put on and take off. It's also hands down the best airport accessory ever.

I love my Ergo, for my big and little girls (2.5 y and 8 m). I used the infant insert this second time around, rather than wearing the Moby, and it was perfect. From the get-go, I was able to nurse the baby in it, something I couldn't figure out with the Moby. You might check Costco, if you have one nearby-- I recently got a second Ergo and it was only $75.00.

DeleteLauren, Congratulations on your news!! I used the ring sling and loved it! I got it from a shop on etsy called little monkey pouches. The front flap even had a zipper pouch which was great to put keys, diapers etc, if we were going out for a walk. She also makes pouches for children to use with their dolls. I'm sure if you were good with a sewing machine you could try and make one too.

ReplyDeleteWhen baby #2 arrived, we decided to buy an Ergo, and it's been the best decision as we could use it with both children (we still carry our 16kgs 3 1/2 yo in it!). It's small enough that you can pack it in a suitcase for travelling (as opposed to a hiking backpack with a metal frame), and with the insert for newborn, our baby was very cosy and secure.
I also changed sling, and used a larger and more comfortable Bubba Moe. http://www.bubbamoe.com.au/
I just got the ergo and at Xavier (4 months) has fallen asleep in it twice! He fusses a little at first but we're getting there. He's still a little short for it so the straps are near his face but I read I can just put a blanket under his bottom to help prop him up for now. It is a little bulky as mentioned but very comfy.
ReplyDeleteThe Ergo is AWESOME. I have twins, and for the first year in their lives that was how I got into and out of the grocery store, it's how I held two crying babies at once, it's how we took their big sister to the park, and how we went on walks (I was so not going to buy a triple stroller). My babies are two now and I still carry them in it once in a while on my back. I highly recommend it, by far my favorite baby purchase.
ReplyDeleteWe've only ever used the ERGO carrier (with the infant insert when our daughter was first born) - her first time in it was with daddy when she was 6 days old, and we used it ALL the time!! Literally, everyday, especially from year 1-2 it was the only way I could get her down for a nap for most of her life without nursing her to sleep or rocking her endlessly. I also loved the hip/back carry options when she was old enough, but even at 1.5 years old it was still super comfy carrying her in the front (and I loved it that way too :) She just turned 2, and I haven't worn it since summer ended as it's too cold now to walk around outside where we are, and she prefers to walk anyway - but I'm also 18 weeks pregnant now and I'm not sure how it would work with a big belly...though I know mamas do it all the time. Maybe I just don't know what I'm missing since it's the only carrier we've ever used, but I have ZERO complaints. It has everything we've ever wanted in a carrier (the pockets and hood are AWESOME BTW) and I also used to attach stuff to the straps to keep really hands free (water bottles, bags, etc). I never once thought, "Oh I wish it could also do this". It's an amazing carrier, and can't wait to use it again with our next (and again with our first if we get the chance!)
ReplyDeleteI have a Beco Butterfly II which I loved when my son was an infant (and much lighter)! I thought it was better for the summer than the Ergo because the infant carrier was built in and wasn't as hot. I also used the Moby wrap around the house and a sling. The sling killed my shoulders after a few months, and the Beco was much easier than the Moby to take on and off while out. Good luck, cheers!
ReplyDeleteI can't rave enough about our Ergo. In fact we still use it for our 21 month old when we need to walk to/in non-stroller friendly places. She loves riding on Daddy's back, but will still go to sleep in a front carry for me. I also had a Moby for when she was tiny, but next time around I am thinking about going with a Baby K'Tan. Thoughts?

DeleteI love my Ergo but I don't use it until my babies are about 6 months. For younger babies, the K'tan is my favorite but the Moby is good, too.
ReplyDeleteEveryone I know who has an ergo loves it, but I went with the Beco Gemini. It not only also allows you to face the baby outward (which both my kids loved for times when they were awake in it), but it does not require you to purchase a separate infant insert as the ergo does, making it a slightly less expensive option. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI love my Ergo. Used it for both my girls 3 yrs and 17 months. I still carry my 17 month old in it. It is easy to get on and off. My husband loves it as well. It is simple to adjust the fit between spouses. They upgraded the infant insert between my children. I have both and the newer one is much better but overall I still prefer a sling when they are really little. Both my girls would always fall asleep and nap in it, it has a hood you can snap up once they are sleeping. The storage pocket is easily accessible when your child is in the carrier so you can get your wallet out easily when you are in line at the store. The Ergo was a lifesaver when flying with children, especially 2.
ReplyDeleteThe Ergo is great! I did a lot of research before I decided on the Ergo & waited to buy until I found a good sale online. We were able to use it pretty much right away without purchasing the infant insert. A mommy friend suggested rolling up a blanket & sticking it under the baby's bum to prop him up a bit & it worked great. He really seems comfortable in it & often falls asleep if he's in it for any length of time. This is the only carrier that we have tried, so I cannot make comparisons but it has worked well for our family!
ReplyDeleteI was really excited about getting the Ergo, but my girl absolutely hated it. She didn't like having her face stuck staring at my neck, she would much rather face out and see everything. We'd put her in and she'd cry and push away (which I understand since the straps were right by her head). We tried it early on, using the infant insert, and I felt like she was going to suffocate by the time we got the carrier secured to me. Also, I didn't like how spread her legs had to be in order for her to be held snug to me. The few times we successfully used it were when we went on a few walks - I would keep her on my hip and use the ergo to support her weight. For our family, this was a waste of money. I feel like that's the way a lot of baby products are - some people love and can't-live-without particular things, and others think the opposite. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI can second the Ergo as being great for both parents - espeically if there's a significant size difference. I'm small (5'2, 130) and my husband is not (6'2, 250) and we have both been able to use the Ergo (the "sport" version fits bigger men). He used it as a front carrier mostly when our daughter was very young (didn't need the infant insert because he's so big there wasn't much extra room for her to slide around) and I've been able to use it recently as a back-up plan for hiking when she gets tired (she's a petite age 3, about 35 pounds). The Ergo is nice because it so so easy to pack around and lightweight to carry once you have a walker.
ReplyDeleteThat said, when she was younger (6 months - 2 years) and we'd go for longer walks or shopping, I much prefered my hardframed backpack-style carrier because it was so easy to get her in and on my back on my own. You can get used ones very inexpensively (e.g., MEC Happy Trails, vintage Gerry, Europe Bound, Kelty, etc.). She also loved being up and eye-level with other people. So much more interaction than kids get in strollers.
I haven't thought of the backpack style - there are seriously so many great carriers! It's hard not to buy one of each.
DeleteI used the Maya wrap. Its not as expensive as the Sakura Bloom sling, and they have fun colors to choose from. It has great cushioning on the back, and has a pocket in the front!! Every time I go out people ask about it. By far the best thing I got for my little one. You should check it out! It definitely is a great choice for a sling.

DeleteJust used with our Ergo with our 3 year old on a hike! Definitely a good investment. Plus you can sell it when you're done.
