Warm Up Your Nursery for Winter

11.12.2010
It's been getting colder and colder at night as we near the winter season. With our old, drafty house and radiator heat, we've had quite a time keeping Violet's nursery at a comfortable temperature.

A few things we are trying include:
  • Layering her pj's
  • Flannel sheets
  • Corn warming pad
  • Closing off rooms in our [teeny tiny] house
  • Turning up the thermostat at night instead of down
Despite our best efforts, it looks like we will have to purchase a small space heater for her room. (That is, unless we want to go bankrupt trying to heat our entire old/drafty/uninsulated house!)

But besides the boring practical stuff, here are a few ideas to give your child's nursery decor a warm and cozy look this winter season:

Look to your wardrobe for inspiration. Winter fabrics evoke feelings of warmth and coziness - perfect for a nursery on a cold winter day. Try argyles, flannels, plaids, wools, and tweeds for instant winter style. Crochets and knits are always cold-weather classics, especially if they are made with love by Mom or Grandma. And don't forget faux furs, flokatis, sheepskins, and cowhides, which are widely available at affordable retailers like IKEA and Overstock.

Add life with animals. Sure, there aren't a lot of things that grow in the winter, but you can always liven up your child's space with a few fun and furry friends. Etsy is my favorite place to find whimsical woodland creatures.

Warm it up. Winter whites and blues are beautiful, but can feel cold on their own. Warm up your color palette with warm neutrals, berry pinks, and rosy reds.

Look to the sky. Shining stars, soft snow, and shimmering ice-inspired pieces can add that little bit of  sparkle to your special space.

Put it all together and you have the perfect recipe for a warm and whimsical winter wonderland. If you have any other practical tips for keeping your child's space warm during the cold months of the year, I'd love to hear them! As usual, we need all of the help we can get...

  1. Is there a post about that first idea board? I'd love to know more info on some of the stuff in it...especially that moose print! LOVE it!

  2. A space heater may create a really dry environment in her room. Not good for snotty little noses. I would also invest in a small humidifier (unless your climate is very humid). I swear it is the best thing for keeping our little one sleeping through the night. Now that she's older she knows to turn it on herself before bedtime.

    And fleece PJs.

  3. We have been using a space heater for our son since he was born. His room always seems to be colder than the rest of the house and it was the only way to keep it warm.

  4. These are lovely mood boards that you've created. We have the same problem (chilliness!) in the room that my young son and baby daughter currently share.
