How to Tackle a Baby Registry

2.11.2010
So a few of you mothers-to-be have emailed me and asked about registering and what kinds of things we chose for our registry. It can definitely be an insanity inducing overwhelming process, so I thought I'd do a few posts about it.

First of all, I recommend registering at both a brick and mortar baby store (for the computer-hating technologically challenged friends and family you may have out there) and a universal baby registry site (so that you aren't limited to the products available at one store)

We chose Babies R Us (since it is really our only local baby store) and also created a registry on Amazon. The Amazon registry is great because you can add a button to your web browser that allows you to add products from any site to your Amazon registry.

Secondly, I recommend the following:
  • talk to your mommy friends (they know things)
  • check out the registries of random people (just type a common last name like Smith into BRU's registry search)
  • use the list given to you when you go to register at the store
  • buy the book Baby Bargains:

Take your newly found wealth of information and make a list of things that you want to check out at the store. It may sound like a lot of work, but it's totally worth it when you arrive at the giant warehouse of baby stuff store with a plan of attack! Trust me - the (registry) gun alone is not enough.

So that's pretty much it - Stay tuned for more posts on what we decided to register for, including baby gear, nursery decor, toys, and more! Happy registering!

  1. look on the babies r us website too if that is where you want to register. bring up a catagory and they will show you the items that were most registered for and the ones with the best reviews. reviews are very helpful when deciding between two brands of the same item!

  2. Good point Kelly, I definitely agree - I compared reviews online before making a final decision.

  3. I've been working on our registries for over a week (Target and BRU)and have only added a few items, since it is just so overwhelming. It was nice to go to the store and touch and feel, but I love reading and comparing reviews online.

Can't wait to see some items you've picked out!

  4. I don't have kids, nor am I pregnant. I have, however, shopped for a few baby shower gifts and I can only imagine how overwhelming it would be to try and register! There is soooo much baby stuff out there. I can see why you'd need a strategy before you go.

  5. What we ended up doing instead of opening a separate store registry from our universal online registry was to use myregistry.com as our universal registry because they let you import store registries from some places. This way we were able to have a Target registry in the store that also updates on our online registry, so everybody has an option! I've had my eye on those Gap jeans too, btw!

  6. I registered at Babiesrus for all the items that I needed. It was REALLY overwhelming but I had a blast doing it!
I also registered at cord blood registry. I knew I wanted to bank my baby's cord blood and that it was a little pricey so this helped out so MUCH!
    Good luck
