(random gratuitous photo from the park the other day)
Noticing all of this going down, my mom thoughtfully brought over a potty chair for Violet that she scored at a yard sale (she's a yard salin' queen people!) It got me thinking about potty training in a little bit more detail. Do I even want to go the potty chair route? Or do I want a seat for the actual toilet? Not sure. I've done no research.
If I do go the potty chair route, I'm pretty sure I want something aesthetically pleasing considering that our bathroom is tiny and I'm going to see it every day for quite some time. Sorry mom, but the Winnie the Pooh yard sale chair that you scored will most likely be coming back to Grammy & Pop Pop's house. (We really appreciate it though!) Here are a few 'beauties' that I'm considering:
OR
Although all of those colors are really eye-catching, in the end I'm thinking I'll go with plain old white.
So here's what I need to know - from all of you seasoned potty-trainers out there: what worked for your family? Potty chair or seat? Which one?
Tips? Advice? Will I need counseling?
These are the deep thoughts I ponder these days.
My daughter used her potty chair as a trash can. When we got a potty seat there was a world of difference and she was fully trained by 2. My oldest wouldn't use anything. My 3 year old is STILL not trained. His preference is the seat or nothing when he does use the potty. When we gave him a chair he used it as a step stool. We started Henry on the seat but he is kind of afraid of the toilet so we might try the chair. I personally prefer the seat because it's so much easier to clean than the chair.
ReplyDeleteForget potty training. Where can I get Violet's outfit...in big size? How adorable!!
ReplyDeleteI think you will just have to try them both and see what works best for her. My son showed similar interest in the potty when he was very young (sitting on it with his diaper, wiping...) so we purchased a small potty for him. His interest was short lived and eventually he wanted nothing to do with it. I waited until he again showed signs of readiness (it's really a losing battle if they are not interested) and was very fortunate that it was not a long process for us. I truly believed when he was ready he wouldn't have too many problems with it (and was very happy to be right). He was potty trained a little before he turned 3...certainly not super early, but good for a boy from what I hear!! Good luck :)
ReplyDeletesorry...forgot to include some pros/cons.....Though dumping/cleaning the potty is not exactly my favorite past-time, he does like his "little potty" and it has really come in handy on long road trips. He uses the regular toilet on occasion as well, but prefers his own. He is pretty small for his age, and I imagine he is just more comfortable on the smaller potty. Since I don't have to worry about him falling in, I think it provides him with a little more autonomy too...I'm not constantly standing over him.
ReplyDeletewe had both. so that my daughter could have a taste of success, i filled her up with juice and sat her on the potty in front of the television. peeing occurred within 30 minutes, and we celebrated her big accomplishment! but, we didn't want her to think she could only pee in her little potty, so we also had the little seat to get her used to sitting on the potty.
ReplyDeletethe biggest trick to potty training is GETTING RID OF DIAPERS (pull ups are basically diapers and forgive accidents). my daughter had maybe two accidents in her undies and did NOT like it, and after that it was the potty all the time! it was super quick to train her, and while we had to do some clean up, i would still do the same thing again.
I know I already commented on your potty seat posting on pinterest BUT the bemis toilet seat is the best thing EVER! Make sure if you decide on it to get it with the magnet in the lid. I really hated having to remove the seat every time I wanted to go pee (we had the three in one chair/seat/stool and while on the big potty it wore the enamel off from taking it on and off all day). This way when you close the lid it's lifted up and easy for any one to go. One more thing that has helped us is a travel seat. It folds into quarters and my son doesn't feel like he is going to fall in while we are out.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Katy. The potty chair was nice for the first few weeks, so that my daughter could sit on the potty without having to be cloistered in a bathroom. I also gave her juice (a rare treat) and took away her diapers. We tried and tried with pull ups, but my girl would just hold it until she was allowed to put the diaper or pull up back on, so in the end, we just took up the living room rug and went diaperless for about a week. She got the hang of it really quickly after she knew I wasn't giving her a diaper. Now that she's using the toilet regularly, she just uses the Bemis seat-in-seat, which I love and strangely enough, get complements on from nearly everyone who uses our bathroom. The potty chair served it's purpose, but yeah, I'm glad it has been relegated to the kids bathroom upstairs.
ReplyDeleteYou bet your tush you're going to need counseling. What's wrong with Winnie the Pooh and Tigger? Grammy is NOT happy! I know that Violet loves that seat. She told me so!
ReplyDeleteWinnie the Pooh is great in books, just not sitting in my bathroom 24/7 - love you!
ReplyDeleteInteresting - we'll have to see what Violet prefers!
ReplyDeleteHaha, thanks Molly! I think it's a combo of Baby Gap, Target, and hand-me-downs. I want some of her clothes for myself too!
ReplyDeleteI've heard boys are much harder. Violet is pretty stubborn so we'll see how things go...
ReplyDeleteWhat age was she when you tried this? Is 18 months too young to do the sans diaper thing?
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear you liked it - I think it's the best idea ever!
ReplyDeleteHow old was your daughter when you started to potty train?
ReplyDeleteAll right; I'll put it in my bathroom, because Violet loves it!
ReplyDeleteLove you too!
Grammy
We always used the seat because of the ick factor dealing with the chair (emptying, cleaning, etc.) My youngest was by far the most stubborn of the 3 (nearly 4 before she was fully trained) and we did break down and use a chair for her because we were so desperate for her to train I would have let her go in the yard if she'd asked to. I do think you need to lower your expectations with an 18 month old -- most of them don't have the muscle control necessary to truly train. I would guess a high proportion of the 18 mo olds out there whose parents claim they are trained are just very very regular and predictable -- it's more likely mom who's trained, not baby.
