Violet's Play Room: Befores

6.09.2011
Although the H-Haus is teeny tiny, we do actually have three bedrooms upstairs squeezed in among the eaves. Sloped ceilings and strange nooks and crannies abound, but we mean to make the most of every square inch of space. After Violet's first birthday, we found that we had amassed a mountain of toys - too many for our main living spaces to handle. After much consideration, we've decided to convert the third bedroom into a toy room for the time being. Although it was previously our 'guest room', we really don't have many overnight guests as all of our family lives fairly close by. A toy room will get a lot more use, and it will eventually become Violet's 'big girl' room.

Here is what the space looked like when we moved in (warning - be prepared for something quite shocking):

Yes, the former owner was a bit obsessed with animal print. And purses. And purses covered in animal print. I just thank the dear Lord that she was into borders and not floor to ceiling wallpaper. And yes, yes that is a leopard curtain that you see hanging at the edge of the second photo. Why stop at zebra print when you can have leopard too?

The first order of business was to remove the border, rip out the God-awful carpet, and re-finish some of the walls (although you can't see it the plaster was in pretty bad shape). After a lot of dust, debris, sanding, and sweat, it slowly started on its way to becoming a useable space:

Lurking beneath the black and white stripes of the zebra carpeting was the same worn sheet of laminate 'wood' flooring that we discovered in Violet's nursery, so we decided to install the same oak hardwood flooring in this space. Despite battling with two herniated discs (which has brought a lot of our work to a bit of a standstill), the Hubster just recently finished installing the wood floors and they look amazing! Next up is paint and trim. Stay tuned for more photos to come!

  1. Exciting! I love a remodel! Do you live in a Craftsman by chance?

  2. We're really excited too! Our home was actually described as a Tudor when we purchased it, although it's very tiny so a lot of people call it a cottage :) It was built in the 1930's so it does have a lot of the quirks that a Craftsman home would have.

  3. Yay! Remodel!

Looking forward to seeing the end result! If it is anything like the nursery (and the rest of your house) I know it will be nothing short of amazing!
