Animated GIF Tutorial

4.13.2011
A few people have written to me to ask for more detailed instructions on creating an animated GIF file. It's actually very very easy thanks to the world wide web. Here's how I did it:

1. Take a series of photos. In the animated gif I posted earlier in the week, I just kept pressing the button on the camera every second as Violet made her way around the room. In the example I'm showing you today, we used the burst function on our camera. Not every camera has this, but basically you hold down the button on the camera and it takes a series of ten photos in one second. Here are the ten photos that the Hubster took:

2. Find a site that will create animated GIF's. I really like Picasion.com, which is what I'm using for the example today, however it only lets you add ten photos. If you need more than that (in the gif I posted earlier in the week I used 25 photos), you will have to use another site. I used Imator.com; it lets you add more photos, it's just a little more difficult to control the speed on this site.

3. Upload your photos.

4. Choose your speed, size, etc.

5. Hit create and download your results.

6. Upload to your website as an image and voila! Pretty easy, right?

Happy GIFing!

P.S. Stay tuned for more photos from our day at the park over on Spearmint Baby tomorrow!
